Overview

To provide technical and operational continuity; to ensure that all jobs running on the IBM I run without the vicissitudes of interruption. To provide operational assistance when needed. Your primary responsibility is to ensure the efficient and smooth operation of IBM System I (formerly known as AS/400) computer systems. You will be responsible for monitoring and maintaining the system, responding to user requests and inquiries, and troubleshooting any issues that may arise.

Responsibilities
    • System Monitoring: Monitor the IBM System I environment to ensure the system is running smoothly and efficiently. This includes monitoring system performance, resource utilization, and error logs to identify any potential issues or bottlenecks.
    • Batch Processing: Schedule, run and monitor batch jobs and ensure they run according to predefined schedules. This involves submitting, controlling, and tracking batch jobs, verifying successful completion, and resolving any job-related errors or failures.
    • Run production jobs, either scheduled or ad hoc for business documents (e.g., invoices and reports) and distribute output as necessary. Other standard jobs will also need to be run.
    • User Support: Respond to user inquiries and provide technical support for IBM System I-related issues. Assist users with login problems, application access, and general system usage questions.
    • System Maintenance: Perform routine system maintenance tasks such as applying system updates, patches, and fixes. This may also involve managing system backups and ensuring data integrity.
    • Troubleshooting: Investigate and resolve system -related problems, errors, or malfunctions. This requires analyzing error messages, logs, and system performance indicators to identify the root cause and implement appropriate solutions.
    • Security Management: Implement and enforce security measures to protect the IBM System I environment. This includes managing user access privileges, enforcing password policies, and monitoring system logs for any security breaches or unauthorized activities.
    • Incident Management: Respond to system-related incidents and escalate critical issues to appropriate teams or management as necessary. Coordinate with external vendors or support teams for problem resolution, if required.
    • Continuous improvement: Stay up to date with emerging technologies, best practices, and industry trends related to IBM System I operations. Identify opportunities for system optimization, performance improvement, and automation, and propose and implement appropriate solutions.
    • Documentation: Maintain documentation related to system configurations, procedures, and troubleshooting steps. Update system documentation to reflect any changes or improvements made to the system.

Qualifications
    • 3 years of experience
    • A college degree or equivalent work experience
    • IBM I command set (Control Language Programming) (CLP)
    • Ability to analyze Mimix audits
    • Ability to respond to Mimix notifications
    • Ability to save to tape and restore from tape
    • Ability to apply PTFs
    • Ability to perform IPLs
    • Ability to assist with the installation of new releases and technology refreshes (TRs)
    • Ability to maintain and enhance IBM I reply list entries
    • Ability to maintain and enhance IBM I directory entries including SMTP
    • Ability to configure printers of varying manufacturers and varying features
    • Ability to perform standard maintenance tasks on other equipment
    • Ability to understand current IBM I projects and participate with developers from an operator perspective
    • Have an understanding of the meaning of error messages and the meaning of error responses
    • Have a knowledge of where to go to find resources for solutions for IBM i
    • Prior HMC and Console experience
    • Interaction with users
    • Ability to work evenings, weekends and holidays when necessary
    • Familiarity with S/36 environment
    • IBM system I operations certifications preferred
